The visit of the US team to the First Consultant Hospital about collaboration on Ebola.
A team of medical experts from the United States visited the First Consultant Hospital on August 29th to form collaboration on how to best manage Ebola cases in case it resurfaces.
Some of the staff of the Hospital who were
infected by the Ebola virus and their relatives were interviewed by pressmen.
They recounted their experiences at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Yaba,
where they were quarantined for effective treatment and prevention from
spreading the diseases to the population.
The United States’ team was addressed by the Chief Executive Officer/Chief Medical
Director, First Consultants Hospital Obalende, Dr Benjamin Ohiaeri. The
Hospital was certified ready for operation in September 19th, 2014
after the decontaminations done inside the Hospital and its environment.
The index
Ebola virus case was an eye opener in the management of infectious diseases of
high fatality rate like the Ebola virus. Trans-border transmission of
infectious diseases looks inevitable with the index case but with concerted
effort it would be easy and more beneficial to keep borders across the world
under close watch of health officers not just the military and the paramilitary
in order to ensure proper containment.
The Hospital
management gave assurance to the US team that they are ready to collaborate
with them. He also stated that the Hospital need support and training.
